Getting Started - Beginner's Guide

New to Cobalt Core? This guide covers the basics you need to survive your first few runs and start understanding the game’s core mechanics.

Your First Run

When you start a new run, you’ll pick a ship and a starting crew. Don’t overthink this early — the default loadout is perfectly fine for learning the ropes.

Understanding the Combat Grid

Combat in Cobalt Core takes place on a grid. Your ship occupies one side, and enemies the other. Cards you play move your ship, fire weapons, or activate shields along specific grid positions.

Key concept: Positioning matters as much as damage. A perfectly aimed shot that hits nothing is worthless, while dodging an enemy attack can save your run.

The Time Loop

Each run is a loop through time. You’ll face a series of encounters, and when you reach the end (or die), you loop back. Some things persist between loops — most importantly, your knowledge of what works.

Essential Tips

  1. Read enemy intents. Every enemy telegraphs their next move. Use this to position your ship before they attack.
  2. Don’t hoard energy. You get a set amount each turn — spend it. Unspent energy doesn’t carry over.
  3. Prioritize shields early. Dealing damage feels good, but staying alive is how you actually win runs.
  4. Experiment with crew combos. Different crew members have synergies. Try pairing a pilot with an engineer to see how their cards interact.

Recommended First Ship

The Starter Ship is well-rounded and forgiving. Once you’re comfortable, try the Glass Cannon for a more aggressive playstyle.
